The decision really comes down to personal preference and budget. Ball bearing turbos are designed to offer increased support to the turbine shaft in such applications where sustained load on the center section would decrease the longevity of a journal bearing center section. Ball bearing center sections requires less oil to provide adequate lubrication, this reduces oil temps and minimizes the chance for seals leaking and oil starvation after your engine has been shut down. Journal bearings work well in most situations, they are more affordable than their ball bearing counterparts and offer greater longevity in applications where maximum load under sustained duration is not needed. OEM turbos are typically journal bearing because they are reliable under more moderate boost levels, cost effective and are typically, more serviceable.
